PVD Black Stainless Steel Cladding: 10-Year UV Warranty Data Architects Actually Ask For

Black titanium cladding looks sleek on renders—but will it turn brown in the sun? We exposed 316L PVD panels to 10 000 h Q-SUN 340 (≈ 10 years South-Florida UV) and documented ΔE, gloss retention and film adhesion. Below are the numbers architects keep asking for—and the warranty small-print you can finally trust.

Test Set-Up: Q-SUN 340, 0.89 W/m²/nm @ 340 nm, 102 min light / 18 min spray, 63 °C BPT

  • Substrate: 316L 2B, 2.0 mm

  • PVD film: TiAlN 0.25 µm + 0.05 µm SiO₂ top-coat

  • Control coupon: raw 316L mirror

Key Results After 10 000 h

Property 0 h 10 000 h Limit (AAMA 2604) Pass?
Colour shift ΔE 0 0.8 ≤ 5.0
Gloss 60° retention 100 % 92 % ≥ 50 %
Adhesion (cross-cut) 5B 5B ≥ 4B
Chalk rating 10 9 ≥ 8

ΔE vs Time Curve

ΔE remains below 1.0 for entire 10 000 h Q-SUN test

What the 10-Year Warranty Actually Covers

  • Colour change: ΔE ≤ 2.0 for first 10 years (ISO 7724)

  • Film adhesion: no spontaneous peeling > 5 % panel area

  • Gloss loss: ≤ 30 % from original 60° reading

  • Exclusions: airborne cement, hydrofluoric acid, weld heat zones, abrasive cleaning

Spec Clause You Can Copy-Paste

PVD black stainless cladding shall be 316L min 2 mm thick, TiAlN film 0.25 µm with clear SiO₂ seal coat. UV resistance: ΔE ≤ 2.0 after 10 000 h Q-SUN 340 per ASTM G155. Warranty: 10 years colour, gloss and adhesion.

Installation Tips to Keep the Warranty Valid

  1. Use rubber-gasket floating clips; avoid silicone acids.

  2. Back-ventilate cavity ≥ 20 mm to keep panel temp < 80 °C.

  3. Clean only with pH 7 neutral detergent; no Scotch-Brite pads.
